The Love Spoon - A Token of Affection
Explore the ancient tradition of “spooning” - proclaiming your love by gift giving with spoons.
Love Spoon Tradition
In old Scandinavian tradition, spoons were often given as tokens of affection. A man would fall in love with a woman and before he could proclaim his feelings for her, he would have to prove himself. This would have to be in the form of a spoon. The idea was he would instill all of his experience, knowledge, and skill into an item of everyday use in the home as a symbol of food and plenty.
There are stories of young men wearing a spoon in their breast pocket hoping the one who caught his eye would fetch it. If she accepted his offer, they would be married. I love the ancient idea of openly showing one’s affection towards their sweetheart in this way. This is actually where the term “spooning” comes from, and it’s still practiced all around the world.
